The approval took place after 8 years of discussions in congress and its rules, inspired by the European GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), will only come into effect in February 2020. Put simply, this means that businesses now need to build privacy settings into their digital products and websites. They also need to regularly conduct privacy impact assessments, strengthen the way they seek permission to use data, document the ways they use data, and improve the way they report data breaches. Failure to comply with the rules could result in fines of up to 20 million euros or 4% of your global turnover.
